There are certain eligibility criteria that the individual must meet to apply for citizenship:

Be Permanent Resident

Have lived in Canada for 3 out of the last 5 years

Have filed he taxes, if need be

Pass the test on your rights, responsibilities, and knowledge of Canada

Prove language skills –Speak and write one Canadian official language – English or French.


There are additional requirements if you are:

Applying for a minor – under age 18 years

A Canadian who is applying for an adopted child born outside Canada

A current or former Canadian Armed Forces member

A past Canadian citizen who want Canadian citizenship back

Spouse of Canadian citizens also must meet all the requirements listed above.

The child of a Canadian parent or grandparent may be a Canadian citizen. The child has to apply for a Canadian citizenship certificate.

The members of the Canadian Armed Forces are eligible for a fast track application process.

The individual who have been in prison, on parole or probation, or one who is serving a conditional sentence of have been charged or convicted of an indictable crime will not be eligible to apply for a Canadian citizen


Application procedure


Download and fill the forms for the Canadian Citizen Application package for the individual and children.

Attach all documents needed

Pay the application fee.

Mail the application to the Centralized Intake Office in Sydney, Nova Scotia, Canada.


Citizenship Test


If the application is accepted the individual has to write a citizenship test.

Children under 18 years of age and the person of 54 years and over do not have to write the test.
